Memoir Writing Services: What Actually Matters

Your mom has stories nobody else knows. Your dad knows how the family got here, and nobody wrote it down. You’re looking at memoir writing services because you want those kept, in their words, in a book that outlasts all of you. Good.

Most families mean to ask. Then one day, they can’t.

Here’s what actually matters when you choose, and how we do it.

Three things that matter most

A memoir is only as good as the conversations behind it. Everything else is paper and binding. So look for these three.

  1. Your parent just talks

No weekly prompts to answer. No app. No writing. Most parents won’t sit down and write their life story. Ask them about it, though, and it comes out.

  2. One person, start to finish

The person on your first call should be the one who sits with your parent and writes the book. Your parent opens up to someone they’ve come to know. With us, that’s one of our two founders, from the first call to the finished hardcover.

  3. A real conversation first

Before you spend anything, talk it through: who your parent is, what you want the book to be, and whether it’s the right fit. Ours is a free 30-minute call, with no commitment.

Talking is the whole method.

Questions to ask any memoir service

Whoever you talk to, ask these. Here are our answers.

Who actually talks to my parent?
One of our two founders, the same one from the first call to the finished book.
Does my parent have to write anything?
No. They talk. We write.
How much time does it take?
Three to six hours of unhurried, recorded conversation, at your parent’s pace.
Will it sound like them?
It’s written in their own voice, from their own words.
What if we want changes?
You get three rounds of revisions, and nothing prints until your family signs off.
Can I see a finished book first?

Not ready for any of it yet? Start on your own with our questions to ask your parents.

Why it can’t wait

Nobody forgets on purpose. A little goes every year: a street name, a face, how a story ended. You don’t notice until you go looking for it. The families who get the book are the ones who start.

Cheryl had always wished she’d done this for her own parents. When her family did it for her, here’s what she said:

Cheryl on her couch, smiling, holding up her finished book
This way, my family will know me — really know me — in my own words.Cheryl B., on her finished book

Questions families ask

What does a memoir writing service do?

It turns a person’s life into a book. With us, your parent talks with one of our founders for three to six hours, and we write the book in their own voice, then print it as a hardcover once your family signs off.

Does my parent need to be a good writer?

No. Your parent doesn’t write anything. They talk, and we do the writing.

How much does a memoir writing service cost?

It depends on the package and how many copies you want, so we go through the options on a free 30-minute call, with no commitment.

What is a personal historian?

Someone who records a person’s life story and preserves it, often as a book. That’s what we do: we record your parent’s stories in conversation and turn them into a hardcover book.

Choose once, keep it forever

Their whole story, in their own words, in a book your family keeps.

Most families mean to ask. Then one day, they can’t. We sit down with your parent, record their life in their own words, and turn it into a hardcover book your family keeps for generations. One founder from the first call to the finished book, three rounds of revisions, and nothing prints until your family signs off.
